Hi Mungbeans, Happy Friday!
Its natural health week this week and below i'v noted some of the best tips to help you lose weight/stay fit this winter because I know how hard it can be staying in shape throughout winter when all you want to do is curl up on the lounge with a bowl full of comfort food (or is that just me?) so below are some of the easiest ways to stay fit & healthy!
- Make your food TASTY!
This is the perfect way to get in some extra nutrients from herbs and spices which can be added to vegetables, beans, tofu, meat etc to transform them into deliciousness without adding the extra calories!
NATUROPATHIC TIP: Use onion and garlic to flavour foods when cooking and sprinkle dried herbs and spices on everything (and I mean everything)! My favourites are turmeric, rosemary and cayenne pepper.
- CHIA SEEDS.
These little superstars are full of nutrients, essential fatty acids, fibre, protein and antioxidants. The fibre content and protein source keeps you feeling full and satisfied.
NATUROPATHIC TIP: Add 1-2 tablespoons of organic chia seeds to your water bottle and every time you feel hungry (between meals) take a big sip to avoid excessive snacking!
- Fill up on organic VEG!.
Start eating your vegetables first before you eat the rest of your meal to avoid overeating on meat, fats & heavy carbs.
NATUROPATHIC TIP: Try to pick vegetables high in fibre such as green peas, collard greens, artichoke, butternut pumpkin, broccoli, spinach etc.
- Make exercise a part of your LIFESTYLE.
Set 3-5 days a week for exercise and don't think twice. This may be going to the gym, taking a long walk, swimming, cycling or yoga.
The hardest part of exercise is starting, so tie up those laces and get moving (you can do it)!
NATUROPATHIC TIP: it is better to do light exercise then not to exercise at all so if you don't feel like working out in the gym then go for a nice long walk.
- Be a fish and drink your WATER!
Try to get in at least 2 litres per day! If you feel like snacking opt for a tall glass of water instead, as a lot of the time if you feel hungry, you may just be thirsty! Add in some fruit if you want it to be tastier.
NATUROPATHIC TIP: drink a full glass of water before main meals to stay hydrated and avoid over-eating.
- Do NOT starve yourself!
If you feel like snacking and you have already tried the water trick above, then EAT! We need food to function so when your body tells you its hungry and you've had enough fluids for the day then you really need to EAT!
NATUROPATHIC TIP: Opt for something high in good fats and protein to give you a feeling of satiety. Keep some nuts in your bag so when that 3pm craving kicks in your prepared! (Raw almonds are my go-to).
- Don't be scared of CARBS!
Newsflash:They aren't going to eat you!! BUT make sure they are healthy carbs (or they might)! This includes brown rice, sweet potato, oatmeal, quinoa, beans etc. They are high in fibre, helping you to feel fuller for longer and improving bowel motility important for weight control.
NATUROPATHIC TIP: Make sure your plate is one half vegetables, one quarter healthy carbohydrates and only contains a protein portion the size of your palm.
Below is a delicious muffin recipe to help you lose that MUFFIN TOP!
1/2 cup organic coconut oil
1/2 cup organic honey
2 organic eggs
1 cup mashed, organic, ripe bananas
1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla bean paste
1/2 tsp pink, Himalayan salt
1/2 tsp organic cinnamon powder
1 3/4 cups organic, almond meal
1/3 cup organic, gluten free oats
Organic walnuts for garnish
Preheat oven to 160°C.
In a large bowl, mix coconut oil and honey together with the eggs, mashed banana and almond milk. Then add the baking soda, vanilla bean paste, salt, and cinnamon. Lastly, add the almond meal and oats to the bowl and stir. Use coconut oil to grease the muffin tin and divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups. Sprinkle the tops of the muffins with organic walnuts for garnish. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes and let cool before serving.
These muffins are a healthy snack or the perfect dessert which can be enjoyed guilt free!
