How to SUPER-charge your detox

As the beginning of the New Year has well and truly set in, many of you begin to think about a New Year’s resolution you have set for yourself or maybe some fitness goals you promised yourself you would start/achieve in the New Year. Well, I’m here to tell you that you’re not the only one. Along with thousands of other Australia’s (maybe millions) I have set out some achievable goals for myself which I believe you will benefit from too.

 

Firstly, Hi, my name is Riannon Young, I am a Clinical Naturopath, I work full time and like many of you, I run a busy life and trying to fit everything in each day sometimes feels impossible. However here are some of the daily steps I practice to stay fit and healthy, de-stress, improve my mood and detoxify my body to maintain optimal wellbeing.

 

Follow these three simple steps daily to re-boot your health and detoxify your body! You will thank me!

 

STEP ONE- Every morning - add ½ an organic lemon into warm, filtered water (250ml) along with a super greens powder. This is the BEST way to start your day! I know you may have heard it all before but I challenge you to try it and see how you feel after just a few weeks! This anti-ageing drink fires up the liver, promotes digestive secretions, alkalise's the body, improves skin appearance, lemon is also high in vitamin C which boosts immunity, nourishes the adrenal glands and is also required for collagen production. Chase this with another glass of filtered water (250ml).
NATUROPATHIC  TIP: If you don’t like the taste, add ½ teaspoon of Manuka honey, this will also provide unlimited health benefits for your immune system.

 

STEP TWO- Get moving! Now I know you would have heard this before BUT I don’t mean you have to go to a gym and do 12 boxing classes a week, no no no no, I’m talking about a walk first thing in the morning or after dinner at night along with 3x strength training sessions per week. Exercise has extensive health benefits for the body which is very is important when detoxing. Walking is what I like to think of as the most wonderful exercise of them all! It’s easy, enjoyable and is a good opportunity to spend some time in nature which is something we are disconnected from living in the city. Find a park, waterway, ocean, bush or rainforest and while you’re there think of three things you are grateful for. It is important not to only detox the body but also the mind.
Strength Training: the gold standard in exercise. If you want to improve bone strength and density, burn fat, tone up, build strength, improve insulin sensitivity, improve mood and de-stress, boost energy, decrease the risk of osteoporosis, burn more calories, improve posture/back pain, balance hormones and easily easily maintain a healthy weight, then you NEED to start strength training.

Did you know that strength training can even regulate hormones?
Women: Oestrogen is regulated by increasing lean muscle mass which will also increase your metabolism, which then helps to burn more fat. It’s also anti-ageing!!
Men: Testosterone is increased through strength training improving strength, muscle mass, bone density, reducing fat mass, improving sperm production (fertility) and enhancing sex drive.

 

STEP THREE- Take a liver supplement before bed to cleanse your body of any built up toxins and to improve liver function while your liver is working night shift. This has a cascade effect on skin appearance, digestion, bowel motility and overall improves bodily functions. Three important herbs you must* be taking are Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa).
Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is a herb used to improve liver function, it helps the liver detoxify toxins from consuming a bad diet, taking medication and drinking excessive alcohol, it prevents gallbladder issues, protects the liver cells from nasty toxins, it provides antioxidant properties and is anti-inflammatory.

Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a herb used to reduce fluid retention, improve digestion, stimulate bile secretions, improve toxin elimination via liver detoxification, reduce symptoms associated with heartburn and reflux.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a well known herb used for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and to soothe many GUT issues. It is also beneficial for our brain and promotes phase I & II liver detoxification.

 

AFTER- always remember to follow your detox with a pre & probiotic mix to ensure optimal GUT health and detoxifying benefits can continue long after your detox has finished.
